Solar-powered flake ice machines in Pointe-Sarène, Senegal

In Pointe-Sarène, Senegal, access to ice is critical for the fishing community, yet it is often expensive, inconsistent, and dependent on diesel or grid power. Preserving freshly caught fish in hot local conditions remains a daily challenge, making reliable cooling essential to reduce spoilage and maintain product quality.

To address this, we deployed four solar-powered flake ice machines, each powered by a 27 kWp PV system with 57.6 kWh energy storage, enabling fully off-grid and sustainable ice production.

Our team carefully installed and commissioned the systems and trained local operators, ensuring that the community can run and maintain the equipment independently and benefit from long-term, reliable operation.

Once operational, each machine produces high-quality flake ice with a thickness of 1.2–2.2 mm, ideal for preserving fish without damage. The system generates up to 83 kg of ice per hour, or approximately 1 ton during a 12-hour operating period. It is specially optimized for solar operation and achieves high energy efficiency through Variable Speed Drive (VSD)-controlled refrigeration and inverter technology. The PV system and energy storage can be sized according to required operating hours, ensuring reliable performance even in off-grid locations.

The impact is immediate: flake ice is now cheaper, easier to access, and fully sustainable. Fish can be cooled rapidly, spoilage is reduced, and incomes become more stable, helping the community thrive while strengthening the local food supply chain.

This is more than a machine — it is logistics, engineering, training, and community impact.
