Access to reliable electricity is vital for effective healthcare delivery. Across Nigeria, many hospitals and health centres face frequent power outages, high energy costs, and dependence on diesel generators. These challenges disrupt essential research, diagnostics, and patient services.

At Irrua specialist teaching hospital, located 87 kilometres north of Benin City, these challenges once hindered vital medical research and treatment. With nearly 2,000 staff and hundreds of specialists serving thousands of patients across Edo State and beyond, stable energy was essential to the hospital’s mission. 


But until recently, unreliable electricity caused repeated disruptions in the hospital’s sequencing lab, where viral genomes are analysed over several uninterrupted days. Outages delayed diagnostics, compromised research, and increased reliance on costly, noisy diesel generators.

A solar solution built on existing infrastructure 

To overcome this, Asantys Systems GmbH designed, delivered, installed, and commissioned a 24 kWp solar system with 76.8 kWh of battery storage. The system was integrated into the hospital’s existing energy infrastructure, ensuring seamless operation across critical areas, including: 

  • Sequencing and serology laboratories
  • PCR and extraction rooms
  • Doctors’ accommodations
  • Storage and conference rooms
  • Building lighting and auxiliary devices

By building on the hospital’s existing setup, the solar system enhances performance without disrupting established operations, demonstrating how renewable solutions can complement and strengthen existing infrastructure rather than replace it.

Stable power, stronger diagnostics 

Since commissioning, the impact has been clear. The reliability enables faster and more accurate diagnostics, supporting the hospital’s vital work in detecting and managing viral haemorrhagic fevers such as Lassa Fever. Continuous power allows research teams to work without delays, directly improving the speed and reliability of healthcare outcomes.

“We can now run sequencing continuously for four to five days without interruption — something that was impossible before,” says Dr. Ehizojie Emua, Chief of the sequencing laboratory at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital.   

Sustainable and scalable 

The solar system is maintained by trained local technicians, ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience. Reduced reliance on diesel generators lowers both operational costs and emissions — making the hospital’s energy supply cleaner, more affordable, and more dependable.
